Volleyball Collects Four-Set Victory Over Evansville

The Flames move to 2-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (6-11, 2-3 MVC) opened its third week of Missouri Valley Conference play with a win Friday night, defeating Evansville (4-14, 1-5 MVC) in front of the home crowd at Credit Union 1 Arena.

Senior Gabi Peter led the attack with a dozen kills with a .407 hitting percentage. Freshman Maryam Hussein collected a collegiate-high 11 kills and seven total blocks in the win. Sophomore Emma Colombari had nine kills and 11 digs in the win.

After Evansville tied the opening set at 8-8, the Flames responded with three consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead. Peter recorded a kill off a Paulina Ströh assist, followed by a Peter-Hussein block and a Colombari ace. Freshman Lianna Ortiz added back-to-back service aces to extend UIC's lead to 15-9. The Flames maintained control and closed out the set 25-16 on a Hussein kill off a Ströh assist.

UIC carried its momentum into the second set, turning a 15-12 lead into a 19-12 advantage. Sophomore Sasha Pellettieri and Freshman Robyn Ward recorded kills during the run, while senior Tamara Kisic added a service ace. The Flames continued to pull away behind Young's serve, extending their lead to 23-13. Colombari recorded a kill, followed by a Pellettieri-Hussein block and another Pellettieri kill. An Evansville attack
error sealed the 25-14 set win for UIC.

Evansville responded in the third set, but the Flames continued to battle back. Ströh helped UIC erase an early 9-6 deficit with a service ace and a Hussein-Peter block to tie the score at 9-9. Pellettieri later recorded kills to even the set at 18-18 and 19-19. Peter's kill off of libero's Ava Young assist tied the score at 22-22, but Evansville scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-23.

The Flames answered in the fourth set, breaking a 16-16 tie with seven consecutive points. Colombari served during the run, helping UIC take control before Hussein capped the stretch with a kill off a Ströh assist. Peter added the final kill, also off a Ströh assist, as the Flames secured the set 25-18.
