SAN ANTONIO – The UIC baseball team (1-2, 0-0 MVC) concluded its opening series of the 2026 regular season Sunday afternoon and earned its first win, splitting a doubleheader against Incarnate Word (2-1, 0-0 SLC). In the first game, the Flames fell 13-4 after holding an early lead in the game, and went on to win 9-2 after the offense exploded in the second game.
Will Smoot led the Flames offense, going four-for-nine with four RBI across the two games.
GAME ONE
The Flames jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a
Vidal Colon sacrifice fly in the second inning. An Incarnate Word home run tied the game in the fourth, before the Flames added two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. A
Jake Busson triple followed by another Colon sacrifice fly extended the UIC lead to 4-1 in the sixth. The Cardinals controlled the game from that point on, scoring five in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth to win by a final of 13-4. Flames starter
Brandon Bak grinded in his first appearance of the season, allowing a pair of runs in five and a third innings pitched.

GAME TWO
The Cardinals grabbed an early 1-0 lead off a solo home run in the first inning, but the Flames answered quickly with a two-run home run by
Jake Busson and never looked back. The Flames extended their lead to 3-1 in the fifth after an RBI single by
Will Smoot. In the top half of the final frame,
Lucas Smith,
Gavin Acosta,
Will Smoot and
Jake Busson drove in runs, as the Flames added six runs of insurance.
Aidan Terronez was credited with the win, coming in for relief and pitching one inning and recording two strikeouts, while
Zach Millsap earned a nine-out save.
