Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader

The Flames fell 13-4 in game one before winning 9-2 in game two.

SAN ANTONIO – The UIC baseball team (1-2, 0-0 MVC) concluded its opening series of the 2026 regular season Sunday afternoon and earned its first win, splitting a doubleheader against Incarnate Word (2-1, 0-0 SLC). In the first game, the Flames fell 13-4 after holding an early lead in the game, and went on to win 9-2 after the offense exploded in the second game. Will Smoot led the Flames offense, going four-for-nine with four RBI across the two games.

GAME ONE

The Flames jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a Vidal Colon sacrifice fly in the second inning. An Incarnate Word home run tied the game in the fourth, before the Flames added two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. A Jake Busson triple followed by another Colon sacrifice fly extended the UIC lead to 4-1 in the sixth. The Cardinals controlled the game from that point on, scoring five in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth to win by a final of 13-4. Flames starter Brandon Bak grinded in his first appearance of the season, allowing a pair of runs in five and a third innings pitched.
