CHICAGO – Taking a break from conference play, the UIC softball team traveled five miles north to the campus of DePaul to take on the Blue Demons in a battle of Chicago. The non-conference contest saw the Flames jump ahead early with
Sam Tourtillott hitting a lead-off homer. Action would slow down until the sixth inning when both sides added a run. In the end, the UIC held strong, earning a 2-1 victory over DePaul, their first over the Blue Demons since April 26
th, 2017. With the win, the Flames move to 15-15-1 overall, while the Blue Demons move to 12-19 overall
Sam Tourtillott got the action going with a lead-off homer to left center field on the fifth pitch of the game. The Blue Demons would record a hit in the bottom of the inning, but the Flames held a 1-0 lead after one. In the circle,
Trinity Brandhorst didn't allow the Blue Demons a hit in the second, third, or fifth inning. A quiet game, action picked back up in the sixth. Tourtillott led off the inning with a triple down the left field line. With bases loaded,
Larissa Ortiz hit a sac-fly, bringing home Tourtillott to give the Flames a 2-0 lead in the top half of the inning. In the bottom, the Blue Demons led off with a solo homer to cut the score to one. Seventh inning action saw DePaul put the tying run in scoring position, but Brandhorst and the Flames defense held up strong, coming up with three huge outs to end the game, giving the Flames a 2-1 non-conference victory.
Brandhorst recorded her third win of the season, and pitched her second complete game.
