CHICAGO – For the third consecutive weekend in a row, the UIC baseball (18-23-1, 10-5 MVC) secured a series sweep, defeating Youngstown State (9-34, 6-9 Horizon) with a commanding 5-0 shutout Sunday afternoon.
Early in the game, it was evident the Flames and Penguins were going to be in the middle of a pitcher's duel. Facing off against Youngstown State's Brandon Mikos, senior
Kendall Lyons was dealing for the Flames on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters, including striking out the side to end the top of the fifth.
The stalemate would end in the very next frame, when junior
Jake Busson would send a two-run home run 365 feet over the left field wall to give UIC the advantage.
Junior
Vidal Colon would add an insurance run the very next inning, when he would hit a sacrifice fly out to centerfield, scoring freshman
Sean Cody from third. UIC would enter the later innings with a 3-0 lead.
After Youngstown's State Misael Uriepero grounded into a double play, Lyon's would end his day with a swinging strikeout in the top of the seventh. The hurler would finish with five hits given up, one walk, not a single run across and nine strikeouts on the day.
Busson hit his second home run of the day with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning, marking his 15th of the Missouri Valley Conference season. Colon added his second RBI with a single, again scoring Cody to give UIC it's 5-0 lead after eight innings.
The Flames secured the win behind strong bullpen outings from freshman
Aidan Terronez and graduate student
Zack Millsap. Terronez tossed a hitless eighth, striking out one and walking one. Millsap closed in the ninth, allowing one hit and ending the game with back-to-back flyouts.
