Terre Haute, Ind. – The UIC baseball team's (8-19-1, 3-5 MVC) bats fell to a hush after the first few innings of play Saturday evening, falling 10-3 to Indiana State (16-14, 6-2 MVC) at Bob Warn Field.
After Indiana State took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, UIC led off with back-to-back walks from junior
Lucas Smith and redshirt junior
Kale Jensen in the top of the second. After a sacrifice bunt from freshman
Sean Cody moved both runners in scoring position, senior
Colin Husko poked a single into right field, scoring Smith.
Jensen was the next runner to score in the top of the second, when he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior
Ashton Kampa. UIC's final run of the inning and the game came when junior
Jake Busson took a bases loaded walk, scoring Husko.
The Sycamores regained the lead with seven unanswered runs going into the fourth when Kampa collected his first hit of the game, swatting the ball down the right field line for the double, before being left stranded to end the frame.
In the middle innings, the strong work of graduate student
Jared Lessman showcased coming into the game in relief. He pitched four innings, not allowing a single hit, walking one and striking out six.
UIC's final hit of the night came in the top of the eighth. After junior
Andrew Pyszka drew a walk, Smith singled to center field, advancing Pyszka to third before being thrown out attempting to stretch the hit into a double. The Flames threatened to cut into the lead, but Jensen struck out swinging to end the inning. Indiana State added two more runs in the bottom half to secure the victory.
