Softball Takes Game Two in Murray State Doubleheader

Flames fall to Racers in game one before taking game two

CHICAGO – Back on their own field, the UIC softball team hosted the Murray State Racers for the fifth Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) series of the year. A sunny game one saw the Flames fall to the Racers 16-0 in five innings. With temperatures dropping in game two, the Flames were able to turn momentum around to come away with a 6-4 victory. The Flames move to 17-18-1, 6-8 in conference play while the Racers move to 14-18, 6-6 in conference play.

GAME ONE
Murray State started out strong with a five-run first inning, and they never looked back, as they went on to record at least two runs in every inning but the third. Unfortunately for the Flames, they only collected two hits throughout the five-inning contest. Siena Stickney collected the first hit for UIC in the first inning with a single to second base. The second hit came late in the fifth inning when Diamond Blomlie singled to the pitcher. At the end of five, the game was called via run-rule, with the Racers taking a 16-0 victory over UIC.

GAME TWO
Momentum shifted in game two, with the Flames recording a two-run first inning to take an early lead. With one out and Siena Stickney on first, Larissa Ortiz stepped up and hit a double to left field, allowing Stickney to make it around the bases and home for the first run of the game. Ortiz then scored off an Ari O'Connell single to left field. In the second inning, the Racers would tie the game in the top half before the Flames jumped back ahead with two runs in the bottom half. With Grace Taylor on second, Sam Tourtillott hit a triple to right field, scoring Taylor, before reaching home herself on an error by the Racers. At the end of two, the Flames led the Racers 4-2. Bottom of the third action saw the Flames add one run from a Cameran Rios RBI single to left field. In the top of the fourth, Murray State cut the score to one with a two-run inning. Fifth inning action would come and go before the Flames added an insurance run in the sixth. Stickney hit an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Blomlie and giving the Flames their ultimate 6-4 victory.
