Trading point-for-point in the second set, UIC would break away halfway through, when a pair of kills from freshman Robyn Ward would give the Flames a 16-9 lead. A pair of service aces from Kisic and freshman setter Paulina Ströh would soon be followed by attack errors from Western Michigan would lead to UIC to its second consecutive set point, 25-15.

UIC maintained its advantage early in the third set, with a service ace from junior Jillian Gibbons highlighting a 4-0 run. Western Michigan pulled within one midway through the set, but the Flames answered by scoring seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-16 lead.
