CHICAGO (Sept. 21, 2026) – The UIC Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced today a transformational seven-figure gift from Chicago entrepreneur and philanthropist Omair Ahmed (pronounced oh-MARE ah-MED) that will provide significant new resources to elevate the UIC men's basketball program and position the Flames for sustained growth and success.
 
The investment, one of the most significant philanthropic commitments in the history of UIC Athletics, will support strategic priorities designed to enhance the student-athlete experience, strengthen recruiting and player development, expand program resources and further elevate the visibility and national profile of Flames basketball.
 
In addition to his financial commitment, Ahmed will serve as the Flames' honorary general manager for the 2026-27 season, working alongside third-year head coach Rob Ehsan and the coaching staff to identify talent, support recruiting efforts and assist with roster construction. His involvement will bring an additional level of strategic perspective and resources to a program with ambitious plans for the future.
 
This commitment comes at a pivotal moment for the UIC men's basketball program, which continues to build momentum under Ehsan with 36 total wins and a pair of top-five finishes in the Missouri Valley Conference during his first two seasons at the helm. Last year, the Flames won 19 games and placed third in the Valley, making the program's first appearance in the MVC Tournament (Arch Madness) championship game and earning a berth in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) for the first time since 2003.

Ahmed is a founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Goldfinch Asset Management, a Chicago-based family office that invests in private equity and venture capital funds while directly owning and operating businesses alongside a network of experienced investors and operators.
 
Prior to founding Goldfinch, Ahmed served as Chief Operating Officer at Nexus Pharmaceuticals, where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Under his leadership, Nexus successfully divested its state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in 2024.
 
A longtime Chicago-area resident, Ahmed lives in Wilmette with his wife, Hira, and their five-year-old daughter, Reem.
