Cam Johnson

Cam Johnson is set to begin his third year with UIC baseball ahead of the 2027 season as an assistant coach, helping with hitters in the batter’s box.

Johnson was an integral part of the Flames’ run to the 2026 MVC regular-season and conference championships, helping lead the program to its seventh NCAA Regionals appearance. In his second season at UIC, he guided the Flames to break a 41-year program record for team home runs, finishing the year with 74. Johnson also played a key role in five position players earning postseason honors, including two selections to the MVC All-Tournament Team.

He worked closely with MVC Newcomer of the Year and All-MVC First Team selection Ashton Kampa, who ranked second in the conference in batting average (.366) and home runs (18). Johnson also worked with catcher Thomas Curry, who delivered a standout performance in the conference tournament in the batter's box—batting .462 with six hits, two home runs and seven RBI across three games—to earn Most Outstanding Player.

Johnson was impactful in his first season with the Flames, as he helped in the development of senior Luke Pelzer, who had the hottest bat against the entire Missouri Valley Conference, batting a conference leading .387 and third in total hits (86). Nowak was the Flames lone draftee in the 2025, being picked by the Kansas City Royals in the 17th round, 518th pick overall.

Collectively, the Flames batted .278, tallying 517 hits, 313 RBI and finished with a slugging percentage of .431.

Before coming to the Windy City, Johnson was a member of Creighton’s baseball coaching staff from 2022-24. He was responsible for working with outfielders, coordinating prospect and youth camps for the Bluejays and assisting with the offense.

In Johnson’s tenure in Omaha, the Bluejays amassed over 60 wins, and 17 wins against the BIG EAST Conference. Johnson contributed to the progression of Nolan Clifford during the 2024 season, who collected a .348 batting average with 54 hits, 38 runs score, eight doubles, five home runs and 37 RBI. Clifford was selected in the 17th rounds, 498th overall by the Colorado Rockies.

Before Creighton, Johnson coached at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone, Iowa, from 2018-2021. After joining the DMACC coaching staff in 2018, he helped make various improvements to the program. Johnson assisted in developing numerous hitting and defensive strategies for the Bears. He also led the strength and conditioning program and assisted in the recruitment of new DMACC baseball players.
 
In Johnson’s first year at DMACC, he helped the Bears achieve the ICCAC regular-season title. Since 2018, Johnson has assisted in sending over 40 players to four-year schools and saw one former player, Austin Murr, selected by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
 
During the summer of 2022, Johnson was the head coach of the Badlands Big Sticks located in Dickinson, North Dakota. He directed the Big Sticks to a 31-win season and helped the team secure a place in the divisional playoffs.
 
Johnson attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa where he was a part of over 120 wins over his four-year baseball career. In 2017, Johnson received his Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science with a minor in Coaching from Buena Vista.
