Mitch Mormann enters his second season at UIC after he joined the Flames coaching staff in July of 2024 as an assistant coach with a focus on pitching and recruiting.
Mormann played an integral role for the development of UIC's pitching staff in 2025, as the Missouri Valley Conference recognized Dillon Schueler (Second Team) and Tommy Egan (Honorable Mention) were among the many names celebrated in the post season awards. Schueler made 14 starts during the season, co-leading the staff with five conference wins, tallying 61 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched. Egan collected a 3.63 ERA in conference games, ranking him fourth best among qualifying pitchers in The Valley.
The Flames finished the season with the second-best ERA in Missouri Valley Conference play (5.19), dropping it nearly an entire run a season ago (6.91). UIC held batters to an improved-.269 batting average from the previous season.

Before his time in the Windy City, Mormann made an instant impact for the Bluejays pitching staff during his time at Creighton (2022-24). In his final season in Omaha, Mormann led the team to a team ERA of 4.99, ranking 53
rd in the NCAA nationally. The pitching staff totaled 434 punchouts in the season – the most at Creighton since 2011.
The Bluejays closed the 2022 season ranked 39th in the NCAA with an ERA of 4.33. The Bluejays also held opponents to a .259 average with a 418 strikeouts. In the regular season (46 games), the Bluejays posted a team ERA of just 3.79, which would have placed them seventh in the country.
Mormann's influence helped Bluejay Tommy Steier set the Creighton single season record with a 1.62 ERA over 55.2 innings in 2022. Steier had a 4.02 ERA over 15.2 frames in his first full season with Creighton in 2021. He also played a role in the development of Dominic Cancellieri, who earned Big EAST/NCAA National Pitcher of the Week in his second and third season in Omaha.
In his second stint in Athens, Ohio (2019-2021), Mormann served as the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Bobcats. In 2021, Ohio allowed the fewest walks in the Mid-America Conference (MAC) with 146. They also ranked top 25 nationally in walks-allowed per nine innings (3.15). The pitching staff ranked top 50 nationally in WHIP (1.33), 55
th nationally in strikeouts per-nine innings (9.5), top 20 in strikeout-per-walk ratio (3.01), top 100 nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (8.85) and 105
th nationally in ERA (4.74). He played a major role in the development of the 68
th pick of the 2021 draft in Joe Rock, who just made his debut for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in June 2025.
In the shorten 2020 season, the Bobcats maintained a 10.6 strikeouts/nine innings pitched, as the entire pitching staff held a 27.7% overall strikeout and 27.7% whiff rate.
Mormann rejoined the Bobcats after a stint as an assistant coach and pitching coach at South Dakota State (2016-19). In his tenure in Brookings, he led the Jackrabbits to nine Summit Pitcher of the Week Honors While at SDSU, Mormann coached two First Team All-Summit League closers, three Second Team All-Summit League pitchers and two Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-Americans. The Jackrabbits lowered its pitching staff’s ERA 1.60 from 2016 to 2017 and then 1.95 in 2018 to 2019. Mormann's squad led the Summit League in pitching in 2019, ranking 55
th in team ERA (4.13)
Prior to SDSU, Mormann helped mold North Dakota's Zach Muckenhirn into the program's highest-ever draft pick (11th Round, 331st overall selection) as the head pitching coach and assistant coach from 2015-16. Muckenhirn led the entire Western Athletic Conference in strikeouts with 99. In his tenure, Mormann also signed Matt Wallner (Future MLB First Rounder) and Jake Adams (Future MLB Sixth Rounder) to National Letters of Intent.
Mormann was a key member of the Ohio coaching staff in 2015, when the Bobcats won the 2015 Mid-American Conference championship and made an NCAA Regional. His college coaching career began at Des Moines Area Community College, where Mormann coached the 2014 NJCAA Division II National Player of the Year and won the ICCAC.
Mormann played at Des Moines Area Community College, LSU and Wichita State during his collegiate career. He was drafted three times in college and played in the San Francisco Giants organization.
