UIC head men's basketball coach Steve McClain announced that Mike Kelly was named the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations on July 22, 2019. In the position Kelly will have a role in coordinating film exchange with opponents, managing film operations for practices and games, assisting with team travel, and helping the coaching staff with on-campus recruiting events and tasks.
Kelly served as a student manager for the Flames as an undergraduate student from 2014-18, and was the head manager for his final three seasons under McClain. The Elgin, Ill., native computed statistical reports, assisted in the creation of scouting reports and aided recruiting efforts of the coaching staff. He oversaw film exchange and aided in workouts and player-development sessions with student-athletes. Kelly also volunteered at the NBA Combine in 2016 and 2017.
During his time at UIC, Kelly also worked for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, primarily with Facility Management. He served as a Building Manager and worked with a team of student workers to efficiently conduct events such as baseball games, swim meets and community picnics.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Kelly worked at Stericylce to identify, target and close prospective customesd through outbound sales.
Kelly graduated from UIC with a bachelor's in business administration in May 2018.
