Josie Filer

Josie Filer enters her second season on Ashleen Bracey’s staff, after transitioning into the role of Assistant Coach/Director of Player Personnel in August of 2023, following an exceptional career as a student-athlete.

With Filer on the support staff, she is still impacting the program positively. The former Flame helped UIC secure its second consecutive postseason tournament berth and first trip to the WNIT since 2007. It also marked the second consecutive winning season for the Flames, something the program has not done in a decade (2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons).

"I am thrilled to welcome Josie Filer to our coaching staff," said head coach Ashleen Bracey. "Over the past year and a half, Josie has demonstrated unwavering commitment to our vision here at UIC and a genuine passion for making a positive impact on the development of our student-athletes. Josie had an outstanding fifth year as a Flame during the past season and played a pivotal role in our success in our inaugural season leading the women's basketball program. She brings relatability, hard work, dedication and a wealth of knowledge in the field of health and training. Her addition is truly remarkable, and I couldn't be prouder to have the opportunity to work alongside her in the upcoming season."

In her role, Filer will assist with analysis, and detailed game planning as well as strategic research for the women's basketball program. She will also be responsible for student-athlete development, health and wellness, as well as enhancing the overall student-athlete experience.

Filer arrived at UIC from Omaha as a graduate transfer prior to the 2022-23 season and immediately made a significant impact on the court. The native of Des Moines, Iowa played and started in all 36 games for the Flames, averaging 31.0 minutes per game. Filer led UIC in points per game (12.6) and made field goals (169) and was tied for the team lead in rebounds per game (6.6). Her ability to shoot and finish around the rim made her a challenging defensive matchup. Standing at 6'1", Filer scored in double figures in 23 games for the Flames, achieving five double-doubles. She scored a season-high 22 points on three separate occasions for UIC last year. By the end of her collegiate career, Filer surpassed 1,000 career points.

For her efforts on the court, Filer was named the Missouri Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week twice and earned spots on the All-MVC Third Team and All-MVC Newcomer Team.
