UIC Swimming Experiences Success Versus Eastern Illinois

Oct. 28, 2000

Chicago, Ill. - UIC Interim Head Coach Ina Harizanova expected a close fought battle and successful individual performances as the UIC swimming and diving team battled Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at the UIC Natatorium.

She got both.

The men's team edged out the Panthers 127-115 while the women fought until the last event falling short in the final event in a 126-117 loss. With the win, the men's squad evened its record at 1-1 on the year while the women's team dropped to 0-2.

"We knew the men could win it," said Harizanova. "We expected the women's race to be close, we will pull it out next time."

On the men's side, UIC received first-place performances from senior Diego Lora Coronado (200-yard breaststroke/ 2:08.95), junior Paul Torres (200-yard butterfly/ 2:00.31), sophomore Tom Schwingen (50-yard free/ 21.86, 100-yard free/ 47.33), freshman Jay Arnett (200-yard freestyle/ 1:48.66) and junior David Kimmerly joined Coronado, Torres and Schwingen on the 400-yard medley relay team clocking a winning time of 3:37.14.

Recording first-place honors for the women were junior Adrienne Turri (200-yard backstroke/ 2:14.68) and freshman newcomer Jamie Redway (1000-yard free/10:40.71, 500-yard free/5:13.84, 200-yard IM/2:18.99). Redway's 1000-yard freestyle performance was good enough for a new UIC school record. Her time topped Jenny Yu's 1998 performance of 10:43.28.

"We knew Jamie could accomplish a feat like this," said Harizanova. "She was brought up to do what she did, we feel she can swim faster."

For the second straight meet, the men's and women's diving team swept the competition on the one and three-meter boards.

On the men's boards, sophomore Mike Magee was victorious in both events, taking the 1-meter competition with a score of 266.25 and the 3-meter event with a tally of 290.60. Teammates senior Charles Rock (1-meter/ 254.85, 3-meter 261.55) and freshman Joe Scharnak (1-meter/ 196.20, 3-meter/212.70) finished 2-3 respectively in both the 1-and 3-meter events.

"Mike (Magee) and Chuck (Rock) can both win on any given day," said Head Diving Coach Larry Barcheski. "Chuck's the veteran and Mike's coming into his own." "With Chuck tired this week, Mike stepped up and did a great job."

The women divers experienced the same success as junior Andrea Bove ran away with the 1-meter (227.90) and 3-meter (257.05) events. Newcomers' freshman Jenny White (1-meter/ 181.15/2nd, 3-meter/ 165.65/3rd) and junior Jamie Morris (1-meter/ 170.35/3rd, 3-meter/175.85/2nd) closed out the sweep in both events.

"Bove was fabulous, just fabulous," said Barcheski.

UIC will travel to Evanston, Ill., tomorrow, Sunday, October 29, 2000 to take part in the Northwestern Relays at 12:00 p.m.
