Green Bay, Wis. - Playing without senior setter Erica Anderson, the UIC volleyball team avoided UW-Green Bay's upset bid Saturday afternoon as they outlasted the Phoenix in a five-game marathon 15-9, 14-16, 15-11, 6-15, 15-11.
Anderson, who has been nursing a stress fracture in her foot, was replaced by sophomore Amy McMahon, who posted her first career double-double with a career-high 52 assists and 11 digs while also adding four blocks.
The Flames got a much-needed win as they improved to 15-10 on the season and 4-5 in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, keeping hopes alive for a top three finish in the league. The Phoenix fell to 5-18 on the year, 1-8 in the MCC.
McMahon wasn't the only Flame to record a double-double in UIC's five-game win as three of her teammates also reached the mark. Sophomore Lara Clarkson tallied 11 kills and a season-high 18 digs, freshman Teaha Shepperd totaled 14 kills and a match-best 19 digs while fellow rookie Lindsey Filkins chipped in 16 kills and 11 digs. Junior Lynn Clarkson set a career best in the match with 11 block assists.
Crystal Nucech, who tabbed 16 kills, 15 digs and five service aces in the loss, paced UW-Green Bay's efforts on Saturday.
With the match tied at 2-2, UIC recorded its best hitting performance of the contest to close the match out as the Flames registered a .400 attack percentage with 10 kills on 20 attacks with just a pair of hitting errors.
Don August's crew is back in action on Halloween, Tuesday, October 31, as they travel to DeKalb, Ill., to take on Northern Illinois at 7:00 p.m.
