Oak Park, Ill. - After dropping four of the six singles matches, the UIC women's tennis team needed to sweep the doubles competition if it was to upset 6-1 Cincinnati Friday afternoon at the Oak Park-River Forest Tennis and Fitness Club. The Flames managed to win just two of three, though, as the Bearcats took the No. 1 doubles contest to take the match, 5-4.

"What this team has to realize is that when they have opportunities against good teams they have to take advantage of them," Head Coach Mary Dailey said after the match. "We just sit back and hope the other team will lose. "

Emina Curic and Jacki Farr were both victorious in their singles matches. Curic, competing in the No. 2 singles slot, defeated Amy Trocewicz 6-2, 6-1, while Farr downed Jen Capuzzi 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 3 singles match.

Trailing 4-2 after singles play, the tandem of Farr and Karen Liwanpo helped pull the Flames to within a point with an 8-5 win in the No. 2 doubles contest.

The pressure then fell on Nicole Derouin and Kim Harris, who needed to win their No. 1 doubles match to give UIC a chance at the victory. But after grabbing a 2-1 lead in the set, Cincinnati roared back to win 8-5 and seal the victory for the Bearcats.

Even after the outcome was decided, Curic and Zorica Malesevic won 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles contest.

The Flames are now 3-6 on the season and have little time to think about the loss as they face Ball State tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.
