Tampa Bay, Fla. - Samantha Iuli's sixth shutout of the season and eleven strikeouts paced the UIC softball team to a 10-0 victory over Northern Illinois Tuesday morning at USF Field in Tampa Bay, Fla.
Iuli (13-7), who was tagged with a loss yesterday despite not allowing an earned run, received plenty of offensive support versus NIU as the Flames knocked out 15 hits and plated 10 runs.
Edel Leyden, who tied the school record with her four hits in the second game of yesterday's twin-bill with UMass, continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-4 at the dish, coming just a home run short of hitting for the cycle.
Jennifer Tiffany and Julie Bumgardner also tallied three hits apiece with each also driving in a run.
UIC got the only run they needed in the first inning as Leyden led off the game with a double, then after a fielder's choice by Tiffany pushed her to third, Stephanie Christoferson brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Flames tallied another run in the second as Molly Freeman drove in Bumgardner with an RBI single. After tallying three more in the fifth, UIC broke the contest open in the top of the seventh with five runs highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Abby Booth.
The Flames are now 24-14 on the season and take on North Carolina at 12:00 p.m. at USF Field.
