Ann Arbor, Mich. - The UIC softball team saw its 2000 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as they fell 3-1 to Michigan at the NCAA Region 8 Softball Championships.
Chrissy Garza had the key hit for the second-seeded Wolverines as she broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a two-run double. The pitch before it looked as though Samantha Iuli had struck her out, but the umpire called the pitch a ball and on the next offering Garza delivered the backbreaking blow.
"I made a bad call," said Head Coach Mike McGovern on the pitch selection to Garza. "We have information on the batter and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If she pops up, I look like a hero."
Iuli wrapped up her illustrious career on a sour note, picking up the loss, allowing three earned runs while striking out six.
Michigan's Marissa Young pitched a gem versus the Flames, giving up just three hits while fanning seven.
The Wolverines took an early lead in the game with an RBI single by Pam Kosanke in the first inning, but UIC answered in the third on an RBI single by Edel Leyden.
The Flames finish the season with a 52-25 record.
