Corvallis, Ore. - The UIC soccer team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Sacramento State on Sunday to take first place at the Oregon State/Diadora Soccer Classic. The Flames were victorious Friday night against Oregon State, 1-0, to go undefeated over the weekend and take the title.
After playing scoreless through the first 31 minutes of the game, senior All-American Eric Lukin (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) put the Flames on the board at the 32:42 mark of the first half with what would prove to be the game-winner. The crafty forward went three-on-one and beat the defenders to plant his second goal of the season into the right corner of the net.
UIC, which outshot Sacramento State, 12-10, took a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute as sophomore Jakob Stasko (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) scored his second goal of the tournament. Greg Chrisman (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) sent a beautiful crossing pass to Lukin who tipped it over to Stasko and he buried it home into the right-hand side of the goal.
The Flames then got an insurance goal by rookie Nathan Day (Elgin, Ill./St. Charles) with less than seven minutes to play in the game as he headed in a crossing pass from sophomore Bruno Rasich (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West).
UIC goalie Chris Jamal (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) made three saves on the afternoon to pick up his second victory of the season. He and rookie Scott Greene (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) combined to shutout Sacramento State, which entered the OSU Classic fresh off of an upset victory over #2 Santa Clara.
The Flames will remain on the road this Thursday, Sept. 14, as they'll travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to square off against the University of Michigan at 6:30 p.m. (CST). On Sunday, Sept. 17, UIC will finally take to Flames Field and look to extend its 17-game winning streak when it welcomes Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to the Windy City. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
