Soccer Picks Up First Win Of The Season

Corvallis, Ore. -The UIC soccer team picked up its first victory of the young 2000 season tonight as it held off Oregon State, 1-0, in the first night of action at the Oregon State Diadora Soccer Classic.

Sophomore Jakob Stasko (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way) buried his first goal of the season in the 55th minute as he deflected a corner kick by Nick Dudziak (Bartlett, Ill./Elgin) past Beavers goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer. UIC goalie Chris Jamal (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) faced 20 shots on the night and made nine saves to preserve the Flames' victory.

"Our defense was outstanding tonight and overall I was pretty pleased with how we played," UIC Head Coach Sasha Begovic said. "Both teams had a lot of chances, but we just did what we needed to do to win. It was a nice victory."

UIC returns to action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.against Sacramento State in the final day of play at the Oregon State Diadora Soccer Classic.
