Chicago, Ill. - Chicago native Jeanette Paukert made her homecoming a memorable one as she scored seven of her 11 points in the final two minutes to help Holy Cross to a 69-64 victory over UIC at the UIC Pavilion on Friday night.
With the victory, Holy Cross improves to 7-3 on the season, while UIC drops to 8-4 overall.
Junior Jaysie Chambers led the way for UIC with a season-high 17 points while teammate Charissa Greene chipped in 15 points for the Flames.
"I think it's one of the better games that we've played," UIC coach Tim Eatman said. "But I think we didn't execute when we needed to."
UIC headed into halftime trailing the Crusaders, 31-28. Following the break, the Flames made their move as they took a 49-48 lead following a Josie Cole (6 points) lay-up.
UIC extended that lead to 59-53 before Holy Cross went on a 9-0 run, as Maggie Fontana scored five of her game-high 24 points to give the Crusaders a 62-59 lead that they would never relinquish.
Holy Cross also received solid efforts from both Katie O'Keefe (12 points) and Amanda Abraham (11 points).
"We're going to be a good team," Eatman said. "That was a pretty good team, but I thought that we had a chance to beat them tonight."
UIC will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, as they will take on Delaware State at 3:00 PM in the UIC Pavilion.
