Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball rang in the New Year early, defeating the visiting Delaware State Hornets 56-45 Sunday afternoon at the newly renovated UIC Pavilion.

With the victory the Flames improve to 9-4, while Delaware State drops to 3-7.

Junior Zsuzsa Tarnai led UIC with 12 points, while teammate Jaysie Chambers chipped in 11 points in 16 minutes of action.

"I was proud to see us win without our key players," UIC head coach Tim Eatman said. "We learned a lot today."

UIC came out in the first half and dominated play on both ends of the floor, out-rebounding Delaware State 23-10, while shooting 50 percent en route to a 29-14 intermission lead.

Delaware St. made a run late in the contest, trimming the UIC lead to single-digits three times in the final 1:30, but the Flames proved too strong, converting four-of-six free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Terrelle Waller topped Delaware State with 19 points and teammate Terrana Pyfrom added 12.

UIC will be back in action on Thursday, as they will travel to Wisconsin to take on UW-Green Bay. Action is set for 7:00 PM.
