The UIC women's basketball team may be ranked first in the Midwest Collegiate Conference in scoring defense, but the Flames showed that they could shoot as well on Saturday as they cruised to the 85-71 victory over cross-town rival Loyola at the UIC Pavilion.
"I thought it was a great team win," UIC head coach Tim Eatman said. "That was the first time in a long time that we were all aggressive and we rebounded well."
UIC, led by senior guard Melea Clark's 26 points, shot a season-best 56% (30-54) from the field. The Flames also received solid efforts from sophomore guard LeKesha Williams (14 points), sophomore center Jaysie Chambers (12 points, 8 rebounds) and senior forward Amanda Bartz (10 points).
"We scored 85 for the first time, so we're pretty happy about that," Eatman said. "I thought it was great on the offensive end."
The Flames also took advantage of Loyola on the defensive end as they converted 18 turnovers into 34 points.
"I'm happy with (today's game)," Eatman said. "I thought we worked extremely hard this week and I think we're coming along.
"We can be a good team if we play well together and we have to keep harping on that."
Loyola also received double-digit outputs from four players with Jenetria Harden leading the way with 17 points followed by Tracy Hoffman (15 points), Lauren Sirus (14 points) and Lauren Yops (11 points).
UIC will be back in action on Thursday, February 8 as they will travel to Indianapolis to take on the Butler Bulldogs at 6 PM.
