Charleston, Ill - The UIC men's tennis team had its share of ups and downs in the opening weekend of fall competition at the Rex Darling Invitational hosted by Eastern Illinois University.
On the singles side the Flames posted a 2-10 mark with junior Nick Bodmer and freshman Ken Howrey picking up the victories of the Flames. Both wins came in the first round of play with Bodmer opening the season with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over C. Weber of Eastern Illinois in Flight #1 while Howrey was victorious in his collegiate debut, ousting Matt Blume of IUPU-Ft. Wayne in straight sets in Flight #2.
UIC's doubles results was similar to its singles outcome as the Flames went 2-6 overall.
The tandem of Wade Clark and Bodmer rebounded from a first-round loss in Flight #1 doubles play to defeat Fischer and Blume of IUPU-Ft. Wayne, 8-2. The duo would then fall in the back draw semifinals 3-8 to Hankel and Holberg of UW-Green Bay.
Junior Angel Ochoa and sophomore Amol Desai gave UIC its other doubles triumph, posting a back draw quarterfinal victory over Rhodes and White of Eastern Illinois, 8-6.
The Flames will look to continue to improve this weekend as they head up to Milwaukee, Wis., to compete in the Marquette Invitational Sept. 28-29.
