Box Score
Gainesville, Fla. - The UIC softball team had one chance to make its mark, but couldn't capitalize on the situation, as the Flames were defeated, 11-1, by Florida in six innings in the second game of the GRU Florida Softball Classic.
With the score 3-1 in favor of the Gators (6-3) in the bottom of the third, the Flames (0-7) loaded the bases. Sara Hernandez led the inning off with a single to left, followed by a single to left by Alycia Creese. Brittany McIntyre was then issued a walk from Florida pitcher Mandy Schuerman to pose the threat.
Schuerman then came alive to strike out three-straight UIC batters, seemingly taking the energy out of the Flames.
Then the Gators scored four runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively to etch the final score.
Creese (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Flames, after giving up seven runs on 12 hits and one walk.
Amanda Moore came in for Schuerman to grab the win for Florida pitching four scoreless innings.
McIntyre drove in the lone UIC run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Joyce Cathey who reached on a walk.
The Flames are back in action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. versus South Florida before the teams are seeded and the semifinals of the tournament begin at 4:00 p.m.
