San Jose, Calif.- The UIC softball team posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they swept a doubleheader at San Jose State on Thursday afternoon. The Flames won the opener, 1-0, in eight innings, then rolled to a 6-2 victory in the nightcap at SJSU Field.
With the sweep of the Spartans, the Flames improve to 6-18 on the year.
In game one, rookie pitcher Brittany McIntyre had one of her best outings of the season, tossing eight shutout innings to pick up her team-best fourth win of the campaign. McIntyre scattered seven hits and struck out three SJSU batters on the day.
The contest was scoreless through seven, before UIC capitalized on an error by Spartan second baseman Tara Hall in the eighth to score its only run.
McIntyre bested reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week Carol Forbes (8-7), who was tagged with the loss.
The Flames broke through offensively in the second game. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, sophomore Sara Hernandez broke the game-open with a two-run homer in a four-run frame for UIC.
Junior Alison Aguilar (2-8), who would pick up her second win of the season, worked four innings for the Flames in the circle, allowing five hits and two runs before being relieved by fellow junior Alycia Creese.
Creese, who also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, would close the door on the Spartans the rest of the way to preserve the victory for UIC and pick up her first save of the year.
The Flames will look to extend their winning streak on Saturday afternoon as they continue their spring trip by travelling to meet Santa Clara in a doubleheader. UIC will be looking to avenge a 2-0 loss to the Broncos back on Feb. 1, at the UCSB Early Bird Invitational.
