Box Score
West Lafayette, Ind.- UIC ran into a red-hot softball team on Wednesday afternoon as they dropped a doubleheader at Purdue.
The Boilermakers (21-12), who ran their winning streak to a school record 11 games with the sweep, run-ruled the Flames (7-23), 8-0, in five innings in game one, then took the nightcap by a 4-1 margin at Varsity Softball Complex.
In the opener, rookie starter Brittany McIntyre (4-10) lasted just 2 2/3 innings as she allowed 10 hits and seven runs, six earned to Purdue batters. Junior Alycia Creese relieved McIntyre and allowed a run in an inning-plus of work.
After the Boilermakers plated three runs in the bottom of the first, starter Leighann Burke (13-6) took care of the rest. Burke held the Flames to just one hit in five innings while striking out six batters.
Sophomore Cameron Astiazaran tabbed UIC's lone hit.
Purdue would go on to plate single runs in the second and fourth while rallying for three in the third inning for the final 8-0 margin.
In game two, junior Alison Aguilar pitched well for UIC, but it was not enough as the Flames fell, 4-1.
Aguilar, who fell to 2-10 on the year with the loss, scattered six hits while allowing four runs.
UIC managed just one run, though, off Purdue hurler Diana LaRiva (8-5), despite rapping out six hits of its own.
Freshman Michelle Miller and Creese both went 2-for-3 in the game with Creese driving in the Flames' lone run of the day with a bases-loaded single in the top of the sixth inning.
UIC will look to snap its four-game losing streak on Saturday. The Flames begin defense of their Horizon League crown by travelling across town to lock horns with city-rival Loyola at 1:00 p.m., in the first of a three-game series. UIC and the Ramblers will play a doubleheader on Saturday, then a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
