Chicago, Ill. - Junior pitcher Alison Aguilar captured her 18th-straight Horizon League win, as the Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., native tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out nine batters to help lead the University of Illinois at Chicago to the 3-1 triumph over Cleveland State at Flames Field on Saturday afternoon.
Aguilar did not allow a hit for the first 3 2/3 innings and improves to 9-13 on the campaign. Cleveland State starter Grace Luginbuhl took the loss for the Vikings, allowing three hits and two runs in one inning of work.
With the victory, UIC improves to 16-30 overall and 8-3 in Horizon League action, while the Vikings fall to 15-20 on the campaign and 4-6 in league play.
Freshman second baseman Joyce Cathey went 2-for-3 to pace the UIC offensive attack, while first baseman Alycia Creese chipped in two RBI for the Flames.
Cleveland State left fielder Michelle Beightol collected two hits to lead the Vikings offensively.
UIC jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Creese roped a two-run, two-out double to put the Flames ahead, 2-0.
The Flames tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning as middle infielders Meghan Gallagher (walk) and Cathey (single) both reached base to open the frame.
Sophomore center fielder Cameron Astiazaran laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the duo in scoring position for left fielder Michelle Miller. Miller plated Gallagher with a RBI groundout to extend UIC's lead to 3-0.
Cleveland State picked up their first hit in the top of the fourth inning as Beightol roped a two-out triple down the right field line and later scored on a fielding error by Gallagher to cut UIC's lead to 3-1.
UIC will be back in action on Monday afternoon, as they will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on host Butler for a Horizon League contest, scheduled at 2:00 p.m. (CST).
