Elmhurst, Ill. - University of Illinois at Chicago sophomore Nick Gazis captured the discus title with a career-best heave of 156'9 ?" at the Elmhurst Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Kevin Mitchem also turned in an impressive performance for the Flames on Saturday with a third-place leap of 6'1 ?" in the high jump.
UIC received a pair of sixth-place finishes from Joe Kepinski (pole vault, 13'1 ?") and the 400-meter relay team (44.94). Bob Thurnhoffer placed seventh overall in the long jump with a mark of 21' ?".
UIC will be back in action this weekend, as they will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to participate in the Boilermaker Invitational, hosted by Purdue. Action will begin on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., and will conclude on Saturday at noon.
