Track and Field Breaks Four Records in Season Opening Meets

Flames open indoor season on high note in pair of meets.

CHICAGO, Ill. – UIC opened its 2025–26 indoor campaign with a strong pair of showings at the GVSU Holiday Open and the Cougar Alumni Open, combining for four new records, 13 top-10 all-time performances, and 24 personal bests across the two meets.

MEN
Daniel Chavez placed 2nd in the 5000m Invite at the GVSU Holiday Open, running 14:09.79 to break the UIC school record.
Theodore Cunningham finished 6th in the 3000m at GVSU with a time of 8:20.90.
Amare Harris set a new school record in the 300m at the Cougar Alumni Open, placing 3rd in 34.75.
Olukolajo Sodipe earned 4th in the long jump at the Cougar Alumni Open with a mark of 6.89m, moving him to No. 6 all-time at UIC.
Emanuel Murphy took 5th in the 300m at the Cougar Alumni Open in 35.45, ranking No. 3 all-time for the Flames.

WOMEN
Korima Gonzalez placed 3rd in the mile at GVSU, clocking 4:59.65 to move to No. 5 all-time at UIC.
Isabela Garcia finished 14th in the 3000m (Heat 1) at GVSU with a time of 10:11.89, placing her No. 8 all-time in program history.
Jorie Irving set a new school record in the 300m at the Cougar Alumni Open, running 41.25 for 6th place.
Carissa Uy recorded a new freshman record and placed 3rd in the long jump at the Cougar Alumni Open with a leap of 5.55m, ranking No. 4 all-time at UIC.
Mia Maglaya took 2nd in the triple jump at the Cougar Alumni Open with a distance of 11.00m, moving her to No. 6 all-time.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"We had a great start to our indoor track & field season and it was exciting to have so many outstanding performances between our two competitions," said head coach Paul Zavala. "Always great to have a few school records go down at the first competition of the season and a strong indicator of a memorable season ahead."

UP NEXT
The Flames return to action at the Blue Demon Holiday Invite on Friday, Dec. 12 at Gately Park in Chicago, Ill. Competition is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
