Peoria, Ill.- After a two-hour rain delay and a move indoors, the UIC men's tennis team opened the 2003-04 campaign with tough doubles losses to Valparaiso and Missouri-Kansas City at the 2nd Annual Bradley Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The Flames played tough the whole day, losing by the closest of margins in each of their five doubles losses while picking up a victory point against Valparaiso. Sophomore Pat Zufan teamed with newcomer Steven Phrasisomboune to down the Crusaders' duo of Nathan Gordon and Tyler Neeman, 9-8.
Valparaiso took the other two doubles matches, as Nic Kooyers and Joe Venegas barely fended off Paul Glendenning and Yevgen Ryesnik, 9-8, while junior Ken Howrey and newcomer Karol Zarucki fell to Valpo's Ben Dunham-Freer and Jeff Vrabel, 8-6.
After the heartbreaking battles with the Crusaders, UIC continued the day against Missouri-Kansas City. The Flames were swept in doubles play, 3-0, with identical 8-6 match losses to the Kangaroos.
UIC is back in action this Saturday, September 13 at 9 a.m. for the second day of the Bradley Invitational.
