Chicago, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago soccer team had its 2004 season ended abruptly on Saturday in the Flames' 2-1 loss to Wright State in the Horizon League quarterfinals, but the team takes away a very enticing preview of the future from its experience this past season.
Starting only two seniors the entire season, the Flames had over 10 first-year players get significant playing time throughout the campaign. Four of those fresh faces were honored by the Horizon League last week, as Pavle Dundjer, Kenneth Nightingale, Pawel Otachel and Jeff Engelbrecht received All-League accolades.
Some constants remained from last year, as 2004 All-Horizon League First Teamer Eric Cervantes followed his freshman season with a spectacular sophomore year. The forward led the team with six goals and 13 points, even after missing the first five games due to injury.
Senior defenders Adam Jones and Ryan Singer continued to be the team's heart and soul, lifting the Flames through an 0-5 start to rattle off significant wins over defending league champion UW-Milwaukee and MAC power Marshall, along with a hard-fought tie against No. 25 Memphis.
