Toledo, Ohio- The University of Illinois at Chicago men's tennis team wrapped up a rigorous weekend on Sunday, dropping a 5-2 decision to Ferris State at the Laurel Hill Tennis Club in Toledo, Ohio.
UIC (1-7) received strong performances at the top two singles spots. Artsem Burmistrau won his second match in a row by downing Francisco Valencia 6-2, 6-1, at the top slot, while Karol Zarucki broke a seven-match singles losing streak in team play with a solid 7-6, 6-4 victory over Martin Hoch at No. 2 singles.
Burnistrau and Zarucki almost pulled off a doubles win together against Jason Cole and Kyle Halberg, but the duo was narrowly denied in the 9-7 loss.
Pat Zufan was on track to extend his singles win streak to three matches when he took the first set against Mark Hammelman at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (6). But Zufan's run was halted as Hammelman took the next two, 6-2, 6-0.
The Flames finished the weekend 0-3, finishing a grueling schedule that included a battle against UIC Head Coach Hans Neufeld's brother Carl Neufeld and the SMU Mustangs on Friday night, along with a tough bout against Toledo on Saturday.
UIC is back in action on Saturday, February 28th against Creighton at the Hinsdale Racket Courts beginning at 6 p.m.
