Chicago, Ill.- Junior Laura Macias made a stellar Division I debut at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, leading the Flames with an 18:33 in the women's 5,000-meter event while fellow junior Sam Watson paced the men in the 8,000-meter race at Montrose Avenue Beach on Saturday.
Macias placed 32nd overall among 274 of the nation's top runners with her time of 18:33, the best 5,000-meter time by a runner on the UIC women's cross country team since Jenni Goebel ran the same course in 18:27 at the 31st edition of the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on October 4, 2003.
Behind Macias was fellow third-year runners Lisa Petty (19:29) and Susie Martinez (20:14).
Watson led the men's team at the event for the second consecutive season, running a 26:07. He was followed by fellow junior Jim Sulzberger's 26:38 and sophomore Jorge Flores' 26:42.
Amidst a tough, crowded field on both sides, the UIC men placed 22nd, while the Flames women finished 23rd.
UIC returns to action at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., on Friday, October 14th.
