Chicago, Ill. - The Flames volleyball team (12-18, 8-6) clinched a 3-2 (30-19, 33-35, 30-32, 30-24, 15-12) nailbiter versus Youngstown State (7-21, 0-14) in their last regular-season match at the Flames Athletic Center tonight.
The Flames are set to host the 2005 Horizon League Championships next week with the first match (#5 UW-Green Bay vs. #8 Youngstown State) on Thursday, November 17th at 5:00 p.m.The four-day tournament conlcudes on Sunday, Nov. 20th, with the championship match at 1:00 p.m.
With only the top-four teams gaining a first-round bye at the Championship next week, a win today was crucial for the Flames to retain a top-four spot going into the tournament.
UIC's Maura McCarthy picked up her fifth straight double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Senior Tisha Graf marked a season and career-high 15 kills versus the Penguins, while Ambria Springer led the team with 16 kills and six blocks on the night.
Abby Ettenhofer pounded 25 kills for YSU and Katie Shea added another 18 digs for the Penguins.
UIC cruised by the YSU in game one, beating the Penguins 30-19.
Youngstown State led early in game two, but UIC tied it up a 10-10 on a service error by Ettenhofer. With the game at 33-33, a kill by Jessica Fraley and a Flames error gave the Penguins the 35-33 win.
YSU pulled out the 32-30 victory over UIC in game three, but the Flames still had fire left. UIC grabbed game four (30-24) and then came out strong to take game five 15-12.
This moves UIC's overall record to 12-18 and 8-6 in Horizon League action.
