Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team swept Wright State Friday night 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 31-29) at the Flames Athletic Center. With the win, UIC picked up its fourth straight home league win. The Flames move to 11-16 on the year and 7-4 in Horizon League action.
The Flames came out strong in game one, leading the Raiders of Wright State by six points (12-6) early on. The Raiders tied it up at 28-28, but a kill by senior Tisha Graf clinched game one for UIC.
The Flames struck first in game two with a kill by junior Ambria Springer. Wright State tied the game at 19-19, but UIC rallied and pulled away from the Raiders to grab a 30-24 win.
With a two-game lead, the Flames sparked a 6-0 run to start game three. Wright State bounced back and hit a 5-0 run to only trail the Flames by one point.
The Raiders began to pull away from UIC, leading the Flames by three points (24-21), but a kill by junior Maura McCarthy gave the Flames a one-point advantage. An error by the Raiders and two kills by McCarthy and Springer gave UIC the 3-0 sweep.
UIC's Ashley Martin led the Flames with 16 kills and 29 attempts, which marked a season and career-high for the sophomore.
Junior Maura McCarthy added a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Katarina Nedeljkovic contributed 12 digs and three service aces on the night.
UIC hosts Butler Saturday, November 5th at 4 pm at the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames then wrap up regular-season action next weekend when they host Cleveland and Youngstown State.
