Chicago, Ill.- University of Illinois at Chicago Head Men's Soccer Coach John Trask made his first hire on Thursday by adding former Indiana University player and coach Sean Phillips to the Flames' staff as an assistant coach.
Phillips served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Hoosiers for four seasons, helping Indiana earn three trips to the NCAA College Cup. In his final season in Bloomington, Phillips played a vital role in the Hoosiers' 2004 National Championship campaign.
"I'm extremely pleased to have Sean join the staff," said Trask. "His background and coaching pedigree speaks volumes of where this program is headed."
During his four-year tenure as an IU assistant, Phillips and the Hoosiers went a sparkling 68-19-4. A former goalkeeper for Indiana from 1991 through 1994, Phillips' main focus revolved around the daily training of the squad's goalkeepers.
In 2004, Phillips' goalkeeping charges posted a paltry 0.63 goals against average, good for seventh in the nation, along with 11 shutouts. Phillips worked closely in the development of NSCAA All-American keeper Jay Nolly, the 22nd overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake.
Outside of his duties with the IU goalkeepers, Phillips assisted with the training of field players, home game operations, recruiting, academics, and compliance.
Phillips was also huge part of the annual Indiana Soccer Camp, counting staff selection, field preparation, curriculum development, daily operations and camp coaching among his various duties.
In addition to his contributions at Indiana, Phillips became a major name among the youth soccer ranks in the state of Indiana. He has served as the Director of Soccer for the Cutters Soccer Club since 2002, and he is a staff coach for the Indiana Youth Soccer Association and for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Phillips holds numerous coaching licenses, including an NSCAA Premier Diploma with Distinction, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma with Distinction, and an NSCAA Goalkeeper Level III Diploma.
As a player for Indiana, Phillips made a pair of trips to the College Cup and helped the Hoosiers turn in a 73-15-7 mark.
Phillips graduated from Indiana in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in public policy and went on to earn his master's degree in sport management from IU in 2001.
Phillips recently married the former Allison Jones this past January.
