Chicago, Ill.-Hitting five straight treys in the second half, the UIC women's basketball picked up its third consecutive league victory downing cross-town rival Loyola University, 73-51 at the UIC Pavilion on Saturday. Flames senior guard Chrissy Dizon joined the 1,000-point club, scoring a game-high 20 points.
Dizon connected on a career-high four three-pointers, shooting 80 percent from three-point land. Junior Krystal Hugelier chipped in 11 points. LaShonda Grant added 10 points and Kelly True posted a season-high seven rebounds versus Loyola.
Danielle Lonie led the Ramblers with 17 points and Emily Ponder paced LUC, pulling down seven boards on the night.
With UIC leading by 11 points with 10:57 on the clock in the first half, The Ramblers knocked down four unanswered buckets to trail the Flames by two points.
UIC responded with a three and grabbed a 24-20 advantage at the half.
"In rivalry games, each team brings it best game," UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch said. "We were not surprised that Loyola was ready to play hard today."
Only shooting 34. 5 percent in the first half, the Flames turned it up a notch in the last 20 minutes of regulation, shooting 48.6 percent from the field and hitting eight-for-14 from behind the arc.
Loyola cut UIC's led to three points at the 17:13 mark, but the Flames turned on the heat, hitting five straight three pointers and seven treys in nine minutes to extend the gap.
"We played fundamental defense in the second half," Rychbosch explained. "We also on executed offense and these two components produce wins."
The Flames went on to clinch its third straight league game, 73-51 over Loyola. UIC moved its overall record to 7-8 on the season and 3-1 in Horizon League action.
The Flames travel to Wisconsin next week to battle UW-Green Bay on January 19th at 5 pm and UW-Milwaukee at 2 pm on January 21st.
