Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's basketball team raced out to a 20-point lead in the first half on Tuesday night and then held off a late rally by a resilient Lewis squad to earn a 67-62 exhibition triumph at the UIC Pavilion.
Sophomore Josh Mayo led three Flames in double-figures with 16 points. Senior Jovan Stefanov tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Othyus Jeffers finished with 14 points and six boards.
Jason Genova paced the Flyers with 22 points. Stephan Bolt recorded 12 points and 18 rebounds for Lewis.
It was all UIC in the first 10 minutes on Tuesday night as the Flames raced out to a 23-3 advantage as nine different players scored. UIC held the Flyers without a field goal during the stretch with Lewis' first bucket coming with 9:23 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Flyers didn't buckle, though, and chipped the Flames' advantage to 35-22 at intermission.
UIC would build its lead back up to as many as 19 points in the second half, but Lewis mounted another comeback, eventually pulling as close as 64-62 on a three-pointer by Brandon Dagans with six seconds left.
The Flames would split a pair of free throws and then get a steal and a lay-up by junior Robert Bush in the final moments to secure the 67-62 victory.
UIC shot 43 percent from the field in the game and recorded eight blocked shots. Lewis was limited to just 34 percent shooting, but did win the battle on the boards, 42-41.
The Flames will open the regular season on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when St. Edward's invades the UIC Pavilion.
