Las Vegas, Nev. - The Flames wrapped up their opening weekend at the Alexis Resort Classic in Las Vegas versus Southern Utah University. UIC entered today's match-up 0-4 in the tournament, looking to pick up its first win in 2006.
Game Five - UIC vs. Southern Utah
Scoreless following two innings, senior Joyce Cathey kicked things off for the Flames with a single to the shortstop.
A Southern Utah error and two RBI singles from freshman Melissa Marinacci and sophomore Nicole Robinson gave the Flames a 3-0 lead.
With two on and one out in the bottom of the fifth innings, Southern Utah threatened to cut the deficit when the Thunderbird's Carli Rodeo hit a line drive to UIC pitcher Sarah Clynes who fired the ball to second baseman Nicole Robinson for a double play.
SUU's Marci Pratt ripped an RBI single in the sixth to cut the lead to two runs, but Clynes closed out the inning with two consecutive strikeouts.
An RBI from junior Liz Jacoby extended UIC's advantage to three runs heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore Mercedes Lovato entered the game to pitch for the Flames, helping UIC pick up win number one on the 2006 season.
The Flames wrapped up the Vegas Classic on a high note with 4-1 victory over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
UIC pitcher Sarah Clynes worked six innings, striking out six, to pick up the win and move to 1-1 on the season.
Thunderbird pitcher Stephanie Christiansen allowed nine hits on three runs in seven innings for Southern Utah.
The Flames play in the Palm Springs Classic in California February 24-26th before returning to the Midwest to Challenge three teams at the Southern Illinois Tournament in Carbondale, Ill. March 3-5th.
