Flames Drop Contests In Opening Day At Palm Spring Classic

The Flames continued their 2006 season on the road at the Palm Springs Classic in California today. UIC challenged Pacific and Cal State Fullerton in the opening day of the three-day event. The Flames fell to the Tigers 4-2 and CSF Titans 9-7.

GAME 1: Scoreless after two innings, the Pacific Tigers struck first with one run on one hit. UIC tied it up in the bottom of the third on two hits from sophomore Brittany Dixon and junior Liz Jacoby.

In the top of the fifth, the Tigers produced three runs to take a 3-1 lead on four hits before UIC ended the inning on a pop up to Michelle Miller in left field.

Holding the Tigers for two innings, UIC was down one run in the bottom of the seventh when Dixon ripped a single to centerfield. On an error by the Tigers, Dixon scored and cut the deficit to two runs, but the Pacific clinched the 4-2 win on two consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

Pacific's Brianna Santos picked up the win and UIC's Mercedes Lovato moves to 0-1 on the season.

GAME 2: Freshman Sarah Clynes doubled to right field in the top of the first inning versus Cal State Fullerton to start game two. Later, Clynes scored on a fielder's choice and junior Liz Jacoby crossed the plate for the 2-0 lead.

Cal State Fullerton's Jenna Wheller belted a solo home run in the top of the second inning. The Titans tied it up at 2-2 on two hits. CSF then grabbed the lead in the third on an RBI single from Kiki Munoz and two RBI from Marissa Marzan to gain the three-run advantage.

UIC's Michelle Miller ripped an RBI single to send home Brittany Dixon, taking the 7-5 lead on four hits in the fifth inning.

Cal State Fullerton only trailed by one after scoring in the bottom of the fifth, eventually earning three more runs in the sixth. After holding the Flames in the top of the seventh, the Titans grabbed the 9-7 win over UIC.

Freshman Kelly Cross moves to 0-3 on the season and Brooke Weekly picked up the victory for Cal State Fullerton.

UIC returns to action Saturday, February 25th when they battle #6 Stanford and #11 Oregon State. Following today's games, the Flames are 1-6 overall.
