Flames Dropped By Nationally Ranked Teams At Palm Springs Classic

Palm Springs, Calif. - The Flames battled #6 Stanford and #11 Oregon State at the Palm Springs Classic Saturday in day two of the tournament. UIC fell to the Cardinal, 3-0 and were dropped by the Beavers, 5-2. The Flames move to 1-8 on the season and take on Maryland Sunday, February 26th at 11 am to wrap up the event.

GAME THREE: Scoreless for two innings, the Cardinal heated up the bats, grabbing a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice. With one out and one on, senior shortstop Lauren Lappin belted two-run homer to give Stanford the 3-0 advantage.

With one last at bat in the top of the seventh, freshman Sarah Clynes ripped one up the middle for a base hit. Pinch-hitting for Michelle Miller, senior Nicole Sheppard singled to the pitcher.

With two on, Meghan Gallagher hit a line drive into a double play and Liz Jacoby popped out to Stanford's centerfielder to give the Cardinal the 3-0 victory.

Stanford's Laura Severson picked up the win on the mound and senior Brittany McIntrye moved to 0-2 on the season.

GAME FOUR: UIC struck first in the top of the first on a single by senior Michelle Miller, followed by an RBI double from centerfielder Nicole Shepard to put the Flames up by two.

Oregon State responded with a two-run homer from Adrienne Alo, tying it all 2-2 after the first inning of play. In the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers took a three-run lead on two hits. Holding the Flames in the next two innings, Oregon State picked up the 5-2 victory.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Clynes moves to 1-2 for the Flames on the mound. Ta'Tyana McElroy grabbed the win for the Beavers and Cambrin McGowan earned the save.

The Flames return to the Midwest to challenge Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois and Iowa at the SIU Tournament in Carbondale, Ill. March 4-5th.
