Softball Drops A Pair To Indiana In Home Opener

Chicago, Ill.-After dropping a pair to the Indiana Hoosiers in UIC's home opener, the Flames move to 9-21 on the season and are set to kick off Horizon League action this weekend in a three-game series versus Cleveland State on the road.

In two games, Brittany Dixon went 3-for-6 and Lauren Brennan belted her first homer of the season to give the Flames an early, 2-1, lead in game two against the Hoosiers.

Game One: Indiana 6, UIC 2

Scoreless after one inning, Indiana took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on one hit. Leaving one on base, the Hoosiers extended their advantage on an RBI double by Anna Olson into centerfield in the third.

After Indiana added two more runs in the fifth (5-0), the Flames cut the deficit on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Nikki Shepard doubled to centerfield, followed by a double to left field from senior Joyce Cathey. With two on, second baseman Nicole Robinson ripped a single to send Shepard and Cathey home, trailing Indiana, 6-2.

The Hoosiers held UIC in the seventh after putting a sixth run on the board to top the Flames, 6-2, in game one of the doubleheader.

Indiana's Mariangee Bogado picked up the win for the Hoosiers with an 8-4 record on the season on six strikeouts in seven innings. Freshman Sarah Clynes moves to 4-5 overall for the Flames.

Game Two: Indiana 9, UIC 2

With a runner on third, the Hoosiers struck first on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Mariangee Bogado in the top of the second inning.

Sophomore Lauren Brennan answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to give UIC a 2-1 lead, marking the third baseman's first home run of the season.

Jennilee Huddleston knotted it up a 2-2 with a leadoff homer to left field in the top of the fourth. Bogado hit one up the middle for an RBI single, sending Abby Page across the plate for a 4-2 Indiana cushion. With two outs and the bases loaded, junior Kim Richards thumped a grand slam home run to centerfield.

The Hoosiers picked up a run in the fifth, eventually dropping the Flames, 9-2, to clinch the doubleheader. With three strikeouts in seven innings, Megan Roark moves to 6-7 on the year, allowing four hits on the night.

4-8 overall, Kelly Cross posted five strikeouts in 32 at bats versus the Hoosiers in the game two.

UIC travels to take on Cleveland State in a three-game series on Saturday, April 1 in a doubleheader, beginning at 12 pm (EST) to kick off Horizon League action. The Flames then wrap up the series on Sunday, April 2nd at 12 pm (EST).
