Carbondale, Ill. -The UIC softball team challenged Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois in day one of the SIU Tournament, beginning at 10 am Saturday. The Huskies edged the Flames 1-0 in game one and SIU topped UIC 5-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.

In the bottom of the third, NIU's Kelly Park ripped a triple. With Park on third base, Michelle Nendza reached on an error, sending Park home for the only run of the game.
With one more hit than the Huskies (5-4), UIC threatened to score in the top of the sixth, but Player of the Week Nikki Shepard grounded out to third to end the inning.
Senior pitcher Brittany McIntrye moves to 0-3 on the season and Lindsey Lachina picks up the 1-0 win for the Huskies on the mound.
Game Two: The Flames struck first versus the Salukis in the top of the first inning with a double by freshman Sarah Clynes. With Clynes on third, Nikki Rogers hit an RBI single, giving UIC a 1-0 lead.
SIU tied it up in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Jayme Wamsley. Sarah Clynes then replaced Kelly Cross on the mound for the Flames.
The Salukis racked up three more runs to take a 4-1 advantage after two innings of play. UIC cut the lead on an RBI single from Melissa Marinacci in the top of the fifth.
Scoring again in the bottom of the fifth inning, SIU held the Flames for the 5-2 win.
Cassidy Scoggins picks up the win for SIU in the mound and Kelly Cross moves to 0-4.
The Flames travel to play in two Tampa area tournaments hosted by the University of South Florida, starting with the USF Adidas Classic in Clearwater, March 9-11th. UIC will take on Temple, Hofstra, Tennessee, NC State and Buffalo in the three-day event.
