Carbondale, Ill. - The UIC softball team was topped by the University of Iowa in the second day of the SIU Tournament. Although the Flames rallied back in the seventh, the Hawkeyes grabbed the 4-3 win.
Game Three: In the bottom of the first inning with two on, Iowa's Summer Downs hit an RBI single, giving the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead early in the game.
Iowa extended its advantage on a solo homer by Emily Nichols in the third. Replacing UIC senior Brittany McIntrye on the mound, freshman Sarah Clynes came in to pitch for the Flames.
UI's Murlock hit an RBI single to UIC shortstop Joyce Cathey, sending Iowa's Erin Riemersma home for a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh with two on, UIC's Michelle Miller ripped an RBI triple to cut the deficit to two runs. Freshman Melissa Marinacci followed with an RBI single to center field to make the score 4-3, but Iowa ended the inning for the win.
Sarah Clynes moves to 1-3 overall. Iowa's Ali Arnold picks up the win and Brittany Weil earns the save.
The Flames play in two Tampa area tournaments hosted by the University of South Florida, beginning with the Adidas Classic March 9-12th in Clearwater, FL.
