Youngstown, Ohio-Youngstown State snapped the UIC seven-game Horizon League winning streak on Sunday when the Penguins downed the Flames, 5-0, at McCune Park to complete the three-game series.
UIC slips to 17-25 overall and 8-3 in conference play, while Youngstown State improves its overall record to 11-14 and 6-4 in league action.
Game Three: UIC 0, YSU 5
Centerfielder Nikki Shepard led the Flames at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Freshman Kristen McDonnell went 2-for-2 for the Penguins with two RBI and a solo homer in the fifth to give YSU a three-run cushion.
Karlie Burnell picks up the win and shutout for the Penguins, allowing nine hits in seven innings.
Scoreless after two innings, Youngstown State's Tiffany Patteson doubled down the left field line, followed by an RBI triple via Becky Hibner for the 1-0 lead. Kristen McDonnell then popped out to right field, sending Hibner home for the sacrifice fly.
Sarah Clynes replaced Brittany McIntyre in the circle after three innings.
A solo homer in the sixth from McDonnell and two additional runs in the sixth for the Penguins, YSU blanked the Flames, 5-0.

The Flames return home to host Wisconsin at Flames Field on Wednesday, April 19th at 6 pm. UIC then travels across town to battle DePaul on Thursday, April 20th in a single game slated for 3 pm.
