Cleveland, Ohio - The UIC softball team suffered its second straight one-run setback on Sunday afternoon, falling in the rubber game of its Horizon League-opening series at Cleveland State, 4-3.
The Flames (10-23, 1-2) staged a valiant comeback attempt from a four-run deficit with a pair of tallies in the sixth and one in the seventh, but Vikings (16-5, 2-1) starter Grace Luginbuhl left the tying run on second when she fanned senior Nicole Shepard to end the game.
Senior Joyce Cathey started UIC's rally in the sixth inning with a two-run triple. Freshman Sarah Clynes (2-for-2) then cut Cleveland State's lead to one in the seventh with an RBI double.
Clynes started in the circle for the Flames and was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Luginbuhl moved to 10-3 on the year with the win, tossing all seven innings and striking out 10.
UIC will be back in action on Tuesday, April 4th, when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for an afternoon doubleheader with Butler.
