Chicago, Ill.-Nicole Robinson led UIC on offense with a .666 batting average in a doubleheader against Wright State to help the Flames sweep the Raiders on Saturday. UIC improves to 23-31 overall and 13-6 in Horizon League action, while WSU slips to 6-36 on the season and 6-14 in conference play. These two teams wrap up the three-game series and regular-season action on Sunday at 1 p.m. before heading to the 2006 Horizon League Tournament on May 11-13 in Youngstown Ohio.
Game One: UIC 9, Wright State 2
Two-for-3 against the Raiders in game one, Joyce Cathey, Elizabeth Jacoby and Robinson guided the Flames at the plate with a combined two runs scored and six RBI. Freshman Sarah Clynes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Brittany Dixon tacked on two runs and one RBI for the Flames in the win.
Clynes picks up the win after fanning six WSU players in seven innings. Clynes moves to 13-6 on the season, while Wright State's Amanda Cody drops to 1-12 overall.
The Flames attacked first on an RBI single up the middle from Dixon to give UIC a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but Wright State gained a one-run cushion in the top of the fourth on a Melanie McInally two-run homer.
With three on base in the fourth, UIC's Jacoby drilled a two-run single, sending Dixon and Clynes home for the 3-2 advantage. The Flames tacked on two more on a Robinson two-run RBI before the Raiders closed out the inning.
The Flames held WSU in the top of the sixth, followed by a four-run inning to eventually claim the, 9-2, victory.
Game Two: UIC 2, Wright State 1
Robinson and Clynes paced the Flames on offense in game two, both going 2-for-3 versus the Raiders. WSU's Melissa McInally led the Raiders at the plate with a .500 batting average in four at bats.
Scoreless after three innings, McInally kicked off the inning with a double to left field. The Raiders grabbed the 1-0 lead after Dana Boehmer earned an RBI double, sending McInally across the plate, but the Flames answered in the bottom half of the inning on a pop up sacrifice fly from Lauren Brennan to tie the game (1-1).
UIC clinched the sweep on Robinson's third RBI on the afternoon in the sixth as the Flames edged WSU, 2-1.
The Flames and Raiders will wrap up the series finale on Sunday, May 7 at 1 p.m.
