Chicago, Ill.- With the series sweep over Wright State (6-39, 6-15) on Sunday, the UIC softball team (24-31, 14-6) clinched the 2006 Horizon League regular-season title with a 14-6 conference record. Led by freshman Sarah Clynes on offense with three hits and three RBI, the Flames dropped the Raiders, 5-1. UIC battles in the Horizon League Tournament Championship next week in Ohio, beginning on Thursday, May 11.
Sophomore Lauren Brennan went 2-for-3 against WSU with one run scored and Becky Moran tacked on one RBI and two runs in the win.
Brittany McIntyre picks up the victory for the Flames in the circle to move to 7-13 on the season. Wright State's Amanda Cody slips to 1-13, allowing five hits in 13 at bats.
Scoreless after two innings, the Raiders grabbed the early lead on a Melissa McInally sacrifice fly to right field, sending Cody home for the one-run cushion.
UIC tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on the first of three RBI from Clynes on the afternoon. The Flames then broke the game open in the fourth, taking a 4-1 advantage on three hits and one Wright State error.
The Flames sealed the victory in the sixth, when Clynes singled up the middle, sending pinch runner Jenna Yaeger across the plate.
