Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team notched its third straight home victory on Sunday night with a 50-42 triumph over Northern Illinois at the Pavilion. Sophomore Jessie Miller led the Flames with 13 points and six assists.
Junior Nikki Grobbecker pulled down a team-high 11 boards, while Miller and freshman Taylor Manley totaled six rebounds apiece. Sophomore Briana Hinkle added nine points and a team-high four steals in the win.
Shari' Welton paced the Huskies with 14 points and nine rebounds. Kylie York totaled 10 points and a team-best three assists on the night.
It was a slow start for both teams offensively in the first half with only two field goals in the first eight minutes of play. UIC continued its strong defensive game as it took the Huskies 11 minutes to tab their first field goal of the contest.
Leading 17-7 late in the half, Northern Illinois sparked an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to four points (19-15) heading into the break. The Huskies shot 17.9 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action.
UIC continued to lead throughout the second half, eventually owning a 12-point lead at the 5:44 mark. Northern Illinois attempted a late comeback with less than four minutes remaining, but the Flames tightened up on defense and clinched their third straight home win (50-42).
"I give credit to our players defensive performance tonight," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "Several kids contributed defensively and we will take the win and move forward."
UIC heads to Lincoln Park to face nationally-ranked DePaul on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
