Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out 2007 in fine fashion, defeating Western Illinois Wednesday afternoon.
The men's squad overpowered the Bulldogs from start to finish, taking 10 events to defeat WIU 182.5 to 115.5.
The women's team competition came down to the final event, with the two teams separated by a single point going into the 200 freestyle relay. The Flames, anchored by freshman Julia Shallcross, won the relay by two seconds to claim victory over the Lady Westerwinds by a score of 150 to 144.
Senior Dan Hare kicked things off for the Flames with a 20.84 freestyle anchor split in the 200 medley relay, winning the event for UIC in 1:36.09.
Not to be outdone, multiple school record holder Kelly Hashoian took two seconds off her own school record in the 1000 freestyle, bringing the all-time Flames mark down to 10:28.21.
Hashoian also took top honors in the 500 free (5:12.47) and second in the 200 free (1:56.92).
Other freshman contributing wins on the afternoon include Konrad Korth (1000 free, 10:05.60), Andrew Schmitt (200 fly, 1:54.98), Brian Anderson (500 free, 4:48.08) and Steve Yemm (100 fly, 50.93).
Diver Sonia Peterson took both the one-meter (215.30) and the three-meter (225.80) events for the Flames.
Fellow freshman Brooke Sawyer and Evan Dunn were not satisfied with one win for the day, and each claimed three events in the Flames final outing of 2007.
Dunn continued his winning ways this season with wins in the 200 IM (1:57.43), 200 breaststroke (2:13.16) and the 100 breaststroke (59.57). The freshman from Oklahoma made it four for four on the day, swimming the second leg of the victorious 200 medley relay.
Sawyer, a Wisconsin native, placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:07.72), the 100 fly (58.67) and took the 100 backstroke (59.57) over teammate Andrea Giczewski (1:01.62), who placed second.
Giczewski did not take second the rest of the day, placing first in the 50 (23.88) and 100 (52.74) freestyle events, both season bests for the senior captain.
A highlight of the night, the men's 50 freestyle, saw sophomore Cameron Seebeck lead the Flames with a 21.54 effort, followed by fellow second-year swimmer Brenden Doughtery (21.65) and freshman Mark Kalafut (21.92) for a first through third place finish.
The Flames travel down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for their annual training trip in early January, and next take on Horizon League foe Green Bay on the road Saturday, January 12.
